When Val contacted me to plan her and Jonah Willian’s pregnancy session the first thing I did is scheduled her complimentary consultation to discuss her vision for the shoot. Moody Intimate Maternity Session | Columbus Ohio Maternity Photographer

I absolutely love intimate and moody maternity sessions, but they still need to have a softness to them, it’s all about the art of the edit and mood of the lighting. I had to much fun photographing Elvis and Alessandra Merzlikins maternity session. Elvis is the goalie for the Columbus Blue Jackets, of course our favorite goalie. Aleksandra and I worked together to bring her vision to life. She is a Switzerland beauty and very familiar with Russian styles. It just so happened that I had actually fallen in love with that style and had spent several months learning from a few celebrity Russian photographers to learn this technique.

In February of this year I will be opening my brand new 1600 sf luxury studio. This studio was designed to allow me to capture my lighting techniques flawlessly with 12ft ceilings, heated concrete floors, white walls it’s the ultimate space to create the most amazing and treasured photos. Rocky is growing fast and his mamma wanted to capture some milestone photos for him of this fleeting time. Courtney wanted to do an indoor and outdoor session and I absolutely love doing both and especially on beautiful days like today when it’s warm and pretty. The lighting was gorgeous and to my surprise this amazing tree had just bloomed so we had to take advantage of these beautiful purple flowers. I just love how this came out with his adorable overalls and the beautiful white lace dress his mamma wore.I think his mamma will treasure this photo for years to come. This is the perfect image to show off those sweet baby smiles and it’s also a beautiful mamma and baby photo.

TIPS FOR A BEAUTIFUL MATERNITY PHOTOSHOOT COLUMBUS OHIO MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY

Pregnancy is the most special and unique time in every woman’s life. Artistic maternity photoshoot is a wonderful way to document this incredible milestone. 

For many women, this is the first photoshoot experience, they want to feel comfortable, beautiful, pampered and empowered. 

The goal of a professional maternity photographer is to provide the most relaxing experience and give complete guidance in preparation as well as posing during the session. 

SCHEDULING YOUR MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION

Maternity portraits are best captured around 31-36 weeks. Timing can be different for everyone, for mothers carrying multiples 27-31 weeks are recommended. 

MAKEUP/HAIR/NAILS 

A maternity session is more than just a photo shoot it is a day of well-deserved pampering. Pamper your self with manicure, hair blowout and professional makeup session. I recommend natural soft waves for the hair and natural daytime makeup with even skin tone, accented eyes and cheekbones. I encourage my clients to wear false but natural looking eyelashes, their beautiful curve is what make those silhouettes so feminine and gorgeous. I recommend to use individual eyelashes so that they look more natural even in day light photography. Scheduling a mani-pedi treatment a day or two in advance is a must. Soft natural, pastel colors always look great especially for the close up shots of hands a belly.

A day of the photoshoot is a perfect day to plan a date dinner or lunch with their partner after the session cause they will look and feel fabulous!

THINGS TO AVOID

- Even though you might what to look more tan for our session, I recommend my clients to avoid fake/spray tanning, excessive bronzers and shimmers. 

- Try not to wear tight underwear on the day of your session. Arrive to your photoshoot in loose clothing to prevent body marks.

- Avoid too much makeup, dark eyeshadows and highlighting on skin. Keep it more natural and clean.

WARDROBE

Some pregnant mothers choose to embrace their changing bodies and capture tasteful artistic nude or semi nude portraits while others opt for a more modest, fully clothed shots or outfits with exposing belly. Whatever your style and preferences are, there are plenty of beautiful options for clothing and posing. 

Here a few options for the clothing changes you may consider for your maternity shoot.

Form fitting dresses/gowns

Maternity session is a perfect excuse to shop for a few beautiful outfits that hugs the beautiful curves. I recommend to have at least one dress in black to wear for the silhouette shot and another dress in cream or white for these etherial dreamy and soft portraits. Along with formfitting dresses beautiful flowy empire waist dresses are also recommended. Another practical yet lovely option is to buy an long “infinity” dress. Draped in many different styles from strapless to halter, they can be a great option for a clothedportrait.

There are several vendors on etsy.com that specialize in beautiful custom maternity dresses created specifically for maternity shoots. One of our favorite stores is called Sewtrendy Accessories.

Bandeau tops and maxi skirt

Fabrics

Natural silks, chiffons, any flowy fabrics that can be beautifully draped around you, used to cover up and be tossed in the air. I recommend at least 4 yards of fabrics for the tossing image and at least 3 yards for the full body drapery image. It can be just a plain white bed sheet, but with the right lighting and pose - it can look stunning. Think outside the box.

Jeans

Wearing jeans for a few "relaxed" style portraits is wonderful! I recommend to bring a pair of your pre-pregnancy jeans and avoid the belly band of maternity ones. They won't look as cool and sexy on camera. 

Accessories/Statement jewelry

Having a background in fashion photography, I encourage my pregnant mothers to bring beautiful accessories such as statement jewelry, scarves, flowers, hair crowns etc. Textures, and colors will add a dimension to your portrait. However I recommend to keep the images more simple and not to do too much accessorizing so that it doesn’t take away from the beauty of a maternity portrait. "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" and I do follow my concept - Less is More.

The most important tip, I think, is to pamper yourself, relax and enjoy this experience. Find the maternity photographer you connect most and who’s style you love the best. The photographer’s task is to just to take flattering images but to provide the most comfortable and relaxing environment, create an unforgettable experience, provide complete guidance in posing and make sure you feel your best during the shoot and treasure your portraits forever.

I just love indoor maternity sessions. It’s especially nice when the weather turns cold in Ohio and you have little ones that you want in the photos. The possibilities are endless. Shelly called me and was loving the simple and clean styled look with some silhouettes. We started with back lighting ( dream lighting ) which is my personal favorite. I loved her pale pink dress paired with the girls neutral dresses. This lighting setup is so dreamy and perfect for that soft classic styled maternity session and then we moved on to some simple black and white silhouettes. I just love how everything turned out.

This was my first year to have Santa Claus pay a visit to our studio. I wasn’t able to do as many as I had hoped but we got in a few sessions and they were so much fun. Of course we had some crying too so I thought we would have some fun with this. I picked out my favorite crying photos from our sessions this year. Ahhhhh, it’s that time again for family photos. I LOVE fall and nothing wraps up the year better than gorgeous family photos. This is the time where us moms can get in front of the camera and get in those photos. Planning outfits can be stressful because they have to be PERFECT.

I see you pinning those Pinterest closets and panicking over what in the WORLD to wear…not just for yourself, but the entire family. It can be super overwhelming, and although I’m not a pro at this, I have learned some tricks along the way to make this process much easier, while creating a cohesive “look” and getting rid of the anxiety along the way.

So you’ve booked your session with your photographer. YAY! Next step, figure out what to wear. Start asking yourself some questions…

Ask yourself…

The pictures you see here were taken in a Pine Tree Forrest located in Granville, Ohio. I loved this spot so much.This location is perfect for all attire.

How do you want the photos to feel? Classic. Romantic. Boho. Flowy. Whimsical. Timeless. Casual. Urban. Traditional.

This session was taken in the fall so mamma chose earthy jewel tones so that it would feel very earthy AND jive right along with holiday cards. This is great if you want to hang them up in the house year round.

Winter. Spring. Summer. Fall. I always like to make my photos match the season, especially if outside because you want to make sure your not too hot or cold. This can also help you choose colors for your outfits. I always like to mesh the seasons in our overall color scheme.

Ohio tends to not always follow the rules of how the seasons work… you know like when it’s 70 and sunny in January and snowing in May.. You might need to but a few extra things for other seasons to blend in with your shoot Hahaha.

It might sound hard at first, but you should plan everyone’s outfits around YOU. Yep, you you you. You want to be confident in these pictures, so choose and outfit that YOU feel good in. One that makes you take a second or third or even fourth glance at yourself in the mirror and say “mamma is in the house”. You never want to plan everyone else’s outfits and then settle for something to wear because it’s the only thing that will mes well or match with the others. PLUS, I really feel like it makes the process SO much easier when you have a starting point.

Let’s talk denim. I LOVE denim so much and I try to somehow tie it in with most sessions we do. I consider it to kinda be a neutral and it adds some “texture” to the overall look. Tip: S P R I N K L E it in. Don’t overdo it. Don’t have more than one denim piece in the photos. A button up is perfect for dad and bonus it will pair with any color of pants but if your doing fall photos you will want those earthy rich colors.

Start with your outfit and mesh the others around that. Put yourself first for once, Mamma and be confident and LOVE what you wear. You deserve that.

Don’t get too matchy-matchy. Add in various textures, colors that mesh well with one another, and don’t be afraid to pop in a splash of pattern.

Basic isn’t a bad thing. Spice up basic pieces with layers (cardigans, layered button-up, sweater, scarf)

Avoid super bold patterns. You want to look at the picture and notice your expressions, the vibe, and not that super bold printed floral tee and neon pants.

Some of my favorite places to shop are Old Navy, H&M, Zara and Target.

If all else fails with your kids…bring along a small non messy treat to bribe them.

Sarah called me to schedule photos for her sweet baby girl Lizzie. Ms Lizzie was so excited to meet her mommy and daddy that she decided to arrive 6 weeks early, but she was perfectly healthy and decided to make her arrival on Cinco de mayo ( and her mamma told me they had literally just had a taco themed baby shower ) haha.

Her mamma and I talked about if she would have red hair and oh did she. I have been a columbus ohio newborn photographer for 10 years and can still count on one head how many full red headed babies I have photographed. I don’t get many babies with a full head of red hair so I may have let out a huge squeal when she told me.

We dressed her up in beautiful neutral colors to start. I love her skin tones with the neutral colors and can we just talk about how long and beautiful her eyelashes are!! These have to be some of the gorgeous long lashes I have ever seen on a baby. We added a little pop of a teal color with my new fur from Cwtchicoo that I purchased over the quarantine and I paired with with a gorgeous aqua headband that I managed to snag from Poppy & Cy.

I just love how everything came together and can’t wait to design her gorgeous baby book.

I think one of my favorite images from her session is where she is wrapped up in the creme wrap and wearing the headband with the bow. I can’t wait for you to see her beautiful photos.

COVID-19 STUDIO OPERATIONS & POLOCIES

Our studio is and has always been a very clean environment. Our top priority continues to be the health and safety of our clients. We are adding additional precautions to mitigate any risk for your family.

REMOVE SHOES

Shoes must be taken off outside on our studio porch and remain there. Families should bring socks or prepare to be barefoot in the studio for their session.

MASK & SANITIZING

Photographer will be wearing a mask at all times. Parents are encourages to wear a mask as well when not being photographed. We will provide cloth masks with filters if you do not have one. While I do have gloves available, newborn skin is extremely sensitive and due to potential latex allergies photographer will wash hands frequently as well as use 80% alcohol bases sanitizer before touching baby at all times.

ONLY ESSENTIAL ITEMS

Clients are encouraged to bring in only essential items to the studio including diapers, wipes, clothing for baby/photoshoot.

IMMEDIATE FAMILY MEMBERS ONLY

At this time we are limiting session to only immediate family members only. Grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, etc will not be permitted at this time. Situations requiring a support person will be determined on a case by case basis i.e. mother coming along with baby and sibling(s) and father cannot come.

48 HOURS SCHEDULED BETWEEN SESSIONS

To ensure plenty of time for cleaning and airing out the studio all sessions will be 48 hours apart and often there may be additional days in between sessions.

PROPS & FABRICS

All fabrics are cleaned and sanitized between clients. Items that are very delicate in nature such as headbands that are not able to be washed will be stored away for approximately 1 week if used for a session. Most all accessories in the studio can be washed with the exception of some delicate headbands.

Sarah mentioned that Sloane is her rainbow baby and that when she was born she had a knot in her cord, but here she is beautiful and healthy. Meet beautiful Quinn! This gorgeous baby was in the studio recently for her newborn photography session. We started out her session on a brand new wooden heart shaped prop I just got in and oh how I squeeled when I saw how adorable she looked all snuggled up inside. Talk about baby fever! Her mommy requested one of my favorite setups of baby on the moon. I just love how cute she looks in this image. Next we squished her up on the backdrop blankets and played dress up with some neutral wraps and headbands for those adorable newborn poses that we all love so much. She didn’t make any fuss and slept the entire time. After that I took some macro photos of all her cute features. She looks gorgeous in everything.

Baby Cece | Newborn Photography Columbus

Today I have the honor of introducing you to a brand new beautiful addition to the world. You’re in for a major treat today as I’m sharing my favorite images from Cece’s newborn session. Mommy and daddy are smitten with their new sweet girl. She was absolutely perfect during her photoshoot and gave me this HUGE smile. I photographed her on beautiful neutrals ( my personal favorite ) and then added a touch of gray. I absolutely LOVE gray for girls and I even photographed my sweet Evelyn’s newborn photos on a gray backdrop. Mommy wanted a photo with her hands above her head and I just love how it turned out.
